Installing a grip type coupling means preparing and cleaning the pipe ends, inserting both pipes to the correct depth, aligning them, and tightening the bolts evenly to the manufacturer's specified torque. Always follow the instructions supplied with your specific grip type coupling.
Bolted flange joint on an industrial pipeBefore you start
- Read the manufacturer's installation instructions and datasheet for your coupling model.
- Check the pipe outside diameter is within the range the coupling is made for.
- Make sure the system is depressurised, drained and safe to work on.
Step 1: Prepare the pipe ends
Cut the pipe square and remove burrs and sharp edges. Clean the area where the seal and gripping elements will sit, removing dirt, loose scale, paint build-up and heavy corrosion. A clean, undamaged, round pipe end helps the seal and grip work as designed.
Step 2: Check the coupling
Confirm you have the right size and material, and inspect the seal and parts for damage. Make sure the seal compound suits the medium and temperature in your system.
Step 3: Mark the insertion depth
Mark each pipe at the depth it must enter the coupling, so you can check after fitting that both ends are fully and equally inserted.
Step 4: Fit and align the pipes
Slide the coupling onto one pipe, bring the second pipe into line, then position the coupling across the joint. Support the pipes so they do not sag or pull the joint out of line, and keep the alignment within the limits stated for your model.
Step 5: Tighten evenly
Tighten the bolts gradually and evenly, working across the coupling rather than finishing one side first, until the specified torque is reached. This compresses the seal and sets the grip uniformly.
Step 6: Inspect and test
Check the insertion marks, then pressure test the joint according to your system procedure and any project or class requirements. Re-check for leaks.
