- Grip type couplings
Grip type couplings.
Weld-free pipe joints for ships, power plants and industry. Asaus Technologies supplies grip type couplings from Vadodara, India.
What is a grip type coupling?
A grip type coupling joins two plain-end pipes without welding, threading or flanges. A gripping mechanism bites into the pipe wall while an elastomer seal makes the joint leak-tight, so the connection resists pull-out and can be fitted quickly without hot work.
Grip type couplings
Teekay AXILOCK-FP coupling, 219.1 mm (nameplate)Grip type couplings are pipe couplings (also called grip couplings, grip-type pipe couplings or mechanical pipe couplings), not shaft couplings. Asaus Technologies supplies them from Vadodara, Gujarat, to shipyards, power plants and industry across India.
How a grip type coupling works.
Insert
Both plain pipe ends are pushed into the coupling to the marked depth.
Tighten
The bolts are tightened evenly to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Grip and seal
The seal compresses against the pipe while the grip elements resist pull-out.
Where grip type couplings are used.
- Shipbuilding and marine piping, where welding on board is slow or restricted. Asaus Technologies has supplied grip type couplings to GRSE.
- Industrial and process piping, and utilities such as water services.
- Repair and maintenance, where a section must be changed quickly.
Suitability for a specific system depends on the model, pipe, medium, pressure and temperature.
Grip type coupling vs welded and flanged joints.
| Welded joint | Flanged joint | Grip type coupling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot work required | Yes | Often, to fit the flanges | No |
| Installation speed | Slower | Moderate | Fast |
| Replacing a section | Cut and re-weld | Unbolt, alignment is critical | Loosen and refit |
| Pipe preparation | Bevel and clean | Flanges fitted to pipe ends | Plain pipe ends |
General comparison only. Check pressure, temperature and approvals against the specific coupling model.
How to choose a grip type coupling.
- Pipe size and material. The coupling must suit the pipe outside diameter and material.
- Medium. The seal compound must suit the fluid and its temperature.
- Pressure and temperature. Compare the model's rating with your design conditions.
- Restraint and movement. Check axial restraint and allowable alignment for the model.
- Approvals. Confirm any class or project approval you need.
Grip type couplings from Asaus Technologies.
Asaus Technologies is an independent supplier of Teekay grip type couplings. Teekay manufactures the couplings; we supply them with the datasheets and documentation your project needs, and we have supplied them to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
What to send us.
- Pipe size and material (outside diameter, wall thickness)
- Medium flowing through the pipe
- Working pressure and temperature
- Quantity and delivery timeline
- Standards or class approvals that apply to your project

Grip type couplings, answered.
What is a grip type coupling?
A grip type coupling joins two plain-end pipes without welding, threading or flanges. A gripping mechanism bites into the pipe wall while an elastomer seal makes the joint leak-tight, so the connection resists pull-out and can be fitted quickly without hot work.
How does a grip type coupling work?
The pipe ends are pushed into the coupling and the bolts are tightened. Tightening compresses the seal against the pipe to stop leakage and drives the gripping elements into the pipe surface so the joint resists axial pull-out.
Do grip type couplings need welding?
No. The coupling is fitted over the plain pipe ends and tightened, so no welding or hot work is needed. This is why grip type couplings are used where welding is slow, restricted or inconvenient.
Where can I buy grip type couplings in India?
Asaus Technologies, based in Vadodara, Gujarat, supplies grip type couplings in India. Send your pipe size, material, medium, pressure and quantity and we will respond with a quotation.
Are grip type couplings suitable for shipbuilding and marine piping?
Grip type couplings are used in shipbuilding and marine piping because they avoid hot work on board. Suitability for a specific system depends on the model, materials, pressure, temperature and any class approval required. Asaus Technologies has supplied grip type couplings to GRSE.
What pressure and temperature can a grip type coupling handle?
It depends on the specific model, size, pipe material and seal compound. We share the manufacturer's datasheet for the model you need so you can check it against your design conditions.
Which brand of grip type couplings does Asaus Technologies supply?
Asaus Technologies is an independent supplier of Teekay grip type couplings. Teekay manufactures the couplings; Asaus Technologies is not the manufacturer.
How do you install a grip type coupling?
Prepare and clean the pipe ends, check the coupling and seal, mark the insertion depth, fit and align the pipes, then tighten the bolts evenly to the manufacturer's specified torque and test the joint. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. See our step-by-step guide for details.
What information do you need to quote grip type couplings?
Pipe outside diameter and material, wall thickness, the medium, working pressure and temperature, quantity, and any standard or class approval that applies. A drawing or pipe list is the fastest way to start.
