In short
To quote tungsten ballast a supplier needs the shape or drawing, the target weight, tolerances, the alloy or density you prefer, any finish, and the quantity. Missing details are the most common reason a quote takes longer.
Tungsten ballast pieceWhat to include
- Drawing or dimensions. Shape, holes, threads and any features for mounting.
- Target weight of each piece and the tolerance you can accept.
- Alloy or density preference. Pure tungsten and tungsten heavy alloys differ in density, machinability and cost. If unsure, say what the part must do.
- Finish or coating, if any.
- Quantity and delivery timeline.
- Operating conditions such as temperature, speed or vibration, if relevant.
Points worth knowing
- Tungsten is very hard, so shaping it takes suitable tooling. Complex shapes cost more than simple ones.
- A heavier piece in a smaller size is the main benefit. Check the available space before choosing the alloy.
- If lead must be avoided, state it in the enquiry so a lead-free option is quoted.
A note on the word ballast
Here ballast means a dense metal weight. It is not the electrical ballast used in fluorescent or discharge lamps.
See the comparison of tungsten, lead and steel for help choosing the material.
