Tungsten mesh heaters and trays in high-temperature furnaces.

Why tungsten is chosen for furnace heaters and trays, and the conditions it needs to last.

In short

Tungsten has the highest melting point of any metal, about 3,422 °C, so it is used for heaters and trays in high-temperature furnaces. It must be used in vacuum, hydrogen or inert gas, because it oxidises in air at high temperature.

Why tungsten for furnace parts

  • Very high melting point, far above most other metals.
  • Strength at temperature, so parts hold their shape when hot.
  • Low vapour pressure, which suits vacuum furnaces.

Mesh heaters and trays

A tungsten mesh heater is made from woven or formed tungsten wire or mesh and gives even heat in a furnace hot zone. A tungsten tray holds material, such as parts or powders, during high-temperature processing. Both are made to the furnace size and drawing.

Conditions for a long life

  • Use in vacuum, hydrogen or an inert gas. In air, tungsten oxidises quickly at high temperature.
  • Tungsten becomes brittle after use at high temperature, so handle used parts with care.
  • Match the design to the furnace power supply and hot zone.

Molybdenum is also used for furnace parts at somewhat lower temperatures. See molybdenum vs tungsten.
